The Passing of One of Our Own.

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you of the passing of one of our members, Meryl Byard on Feb. 19, 2012.  Meryl dealt with some of the worst problems caused by unauthorized leaks from Little Blue yet he always had a smile for us.

We will miss you Meryl.

Little Blue Regional Action Group (LBRAG) f/k/a Citizens Against Coal Ash (CACA) is a citizens coalition of residents in PA, WV and OH and concerned parties against the expansion of Little Blue Run, a Fly Ash Impoundment owned and operated by FirstEnergy Incorporated, an Ohio corporation with available earnings in 2009 of over one billion dollars, Bruce Mansfield Coal Combustion Energy Plant, and for remediating current site conditions that is polluting ground water, surface water and air. "The fly ash emitted by a power plant—a by-product from burning coal for electricity—carries into the surrounding environment 100 times more radiation than a nuclear power plant producing the same amount of energy." (Scientific American, December 13, 2007)  We support strong Federal regulations to coal ash storage and the categorization of coal ash as a Class "C" hazardous waste because the state's regulations are inadequate and loosely enforced.

Thank you!

That crazy blue color is caused by dangerously high levels of cancer causing minerals and heavy metals.  Hydrogen dioxide emits from the impoundment burning mucus membranes and is breathed constantly by residents.  Seeps from the dam are leaching high levels of arsenic, barium, and many other toxic minerals and heavy metals in the community drinking water, surface water where animals graze and where crops are irrigated.  Human and animal health, farm income, wild life, water sheds, the ecosystem of wetlands and air quality are all dangerously impacted.  Oh, and the white stuff is not snow.  That's coal ash.  Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Heath's, Center for Healthy Environments and Communities (CHEC) are researching impacts from the ash disposal site on local water supplies.
